I enjoyed watching the recent program,
Forest, Field and Sky: Art out of Nature by Dr Jame's Fox on BBC 4. As a big fan of landscape artists I was pleased to see some of my favourite's featured. Fascinatingly, Fox visits the intriguing Garden of Cosmic Speculation in Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

The garden opens to the public just once a year in May, so it is a rare sight. I was lucky to be invited along with a small group of garden designers a couple of years ago. The large garden was created by landscape architect and theorist Charles Jencks at his home, Portrack House. The inspiration for the garden comes from modern cosmology. The sculptures and landscaping reflect abstract themes of black holes, fractals, mathematics and formulae. Some parts of the garden, especially the more figurative sculptures are an acquired taste. For me, the most successful pieces are where nature and the lie of land has been enhanced to create some stunning art. The scale of the work is breath taking and well worth a visit.
