Tis the Season ...

... to make an advent calendar! We had a huge amount of fun creating our own advent calendar last year so have decided to make it into a tradition. I picked up the fab polaroid zip printer for an event last autumn and have found it quite addictive (there'll be a review in an upcoming post)! I had planned to send out some festive prints with our Christmas post when the idea came that I could use it to create a calendar.

We happily snapped away and chose an image for an event each day. I then pegged them up with some twine. It's a lovely way to capture this time of year, those special moments with family and friends who also enjoy spotting themselves in the calendar. A great excuse to take some selfies too!

Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas, enjoy the mince pies! x

A Return to the Pink

This week as Pantone have announced their new colour for 2017 'Greenery', I thought I'd take a look back at one of this years Pantone choices, the pink 'Rose Quartz'. In a big change from previous years, Pantone selected not one but two colours for 2016, both are pastel hues. The 'Serenity' blue has been popular but 'Rose Quartz' is the one that has really captivated the imagination of designers everywhere.

PINK STATIONERY TOP PICKS - EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA

The colour pink has been in the doldrums for some time. It was perhaps overused some years ago in a hot pink fashion. From Towie to Barbie, kitsch phone covers to glittery nail varnish, girly razors to laptops, we could buy anything and everything in full on pink. It has now returned in a more sedate manner, a soft pastel hue, something which is lovely to see. With this choice of colour, Pantone have highlighted our need for a break from consumerism, a colour to escape that brash power selling that can be so overwhelming.
"As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent. Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace."

The return of this soft pink has also led to women reclaiming this fab colour for themselves. A lovely thought.
"The popularity of muted, dusty shades of pink can also be attributed to a climate where women feel empowered by acts that are often deemed by men to be frivolous or infantile, like selfies or ‘too much’ make-up, in this way pink can feel rebellious and delightfully self-serving."
Isabelle O'Carroll -  The Pool the Rise of Power Pink
With the arrival of our baby girl this seems a particularly apt time to enjoy this new hue. Let's hope it stays on well into 2017.

Playing with Prisma

I've been having a little fun this week with the fab photo art app Prisma. It's quite addictive!

I love the diverse range of styles Prisma offers - painterly, sketchy, monochrome, illustrative & abstract. The filters take influence from prominent artist styles & popular culture e.g comic book like 'Roy' filter from Lichtenstein's art, painterly filter 'The Scream' from Edvard Munch, graphicy 'Heisenberg' filter from the drawing in Breaking Bad.

FOX CUB WITH PRISMA FILTERS - IMAGES EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA
above: a photo I took of a fox cub that came to visit our garden, prisma filters: dallas, marcus d, light summer

I love the details the filters add on my fox cub photo above. The 'Dallas' filter especially emphasises the autumnal feel of the photo.

ON THE RIVER WITH PRISMA FILTERS - IMAGES EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA

The Canadian geese pic above works well as the open space of the river focuses the filters on the birds themselves giving them a look of floating and stillness.

YUMMY PEACHES WITH PRISMA FILTERS - IMAGES EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA
above: a quick photo I took of an extra guest that arrived with some peaches, prisma filters - light summer, mosaic, marcus d

It's interesting which photos work well - its often not the ones I would have expected. The above photo was one I snapped to send with a moan about having extra guests arriving with my delivery of fruit and veg. The filters elevate it to something that could hang in a gallery with some Dutch/Flemish still life artworks!

If you haven't picked it up already, Prisma can be downloaded here. Happy filtering!

Award Winning Paloma

After a busy week at home prepping for the arrival of baby girl, I was super pleased to hear that the Paloma Christmas range has won the Henries Award for Best Christmas Box or Pack!

AWARD WINNING CHRISTMAS PALOMA - IMAGES FROM BELLY BUTTON DESIGNS

Paloma is a signature range from Belly Button Designs. I have always enjoyed designing this collection right from initial concept. Paloma is now in its third year and still going strong. One of my faves from the 2016 Christmas collection is a new idea which came from seeing those London doorways with the traditional black painted door, golden knocker and beautiful wreath.

A list of all the winners can be seen at Progressive Greetings.

Ikebana - How to Use the Kenzan

What a fantastic day at the weekend with an inspiring ikebana workshop hosted by Junko Popham.  In this class we learnt how to create an arrangement using the kenzan.

MY IKEBANA ARRANGEMENT - IMAGES EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA
above: my latest ikebana arrangement using the kenzan, gerbera & gladioli

The kenzan, also known as the spiky frog, is a tool for holding the arrangement in place. It is made from a heavy lead (to prevent tipping) and brass needles which the foliage is then placed into. The kenzan is then submerged in a low vase with about an inch of water.

I was quite excited to learn how to use the kenzan in this class. It creates those classic ikebana arrangements that are unique to Japan. The nearest we have in western flower arranging could be the florists foam block - not something I'm a great fan of, squeaky, fiddly and seems quite wasteful as we throw them away so easily.

IKEBANA WORKSHOP WITH JUNKO POPHAM - IMAGES EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA
top: junko popham teaching ikebana at the workshop, bottom: arrangements being created

Junko showed us how to place the flowers and foliage for the best effect. The arrangement needs to appear natural and follows the form of how a plant would grow. Junko explained that to achieve this we also need to create depth and layering. Flowers and foliage presented in a line look too much like a stage set, the arrangement is best when it flows naturally.

Illustrator Spot - Jon Klassen (+ Hats)

Whilst wearing my illustrator 'hat' I am always on the look out for new and exciting works. I am happy to hear that there is soon to be a new book in Jon Klassen's hat series of illustrated children's stories, We Found a Hat

WE FOUND A HAT BY JON KLASSEN - IMAGES FROM THE GUARDIAN
top: a sneak peek at the cover of the new book by jon klassen 'we found a hat', below: desert illustration scene from the new book

Beginning with my favourite of the books so far 'This is Not My Hat' (seen below), the trilogy is now to be completed with the new book 'We Found a Hat' featuring desert scenes with tortoises. I really love the quirky edgier style to Klassen's work and it makes a refreshing change in children's literature to some of the more widely available sweet and sugary books.

THIS IS NOT MY HAT BY JON KLASSEN - IMAGES FROM ART OF THE PICTURE BOOK + GALLERY NUCLEUS

top: from the cover of the first in the series 'this is not my hat' by jon klassen, upper middle/lower middle + bottom: illustrations from 'this is not my hat' by jon klassen

The colour palette featuring strong blacks and murky muddy colours goes against the common logic of using every bright, brash, clashing colour available to attract children. The characters are also given space to take centre stage, Klassen hasn't felt the usual commercial pressure to fill every inch of the page. Even the brush lines are 'scruffy' in parts, something that can often be airbrushed out, this gives the work a feeling of realism.

I WANT MY HAT BACK BY JON KLASSEN - IMAGES FROM ART OF THE PICTURE BOOK
top: cover of jon klassen's 'i want my hat back', below: an illustration from the book 'i want my hat back'

I like Klassen's take on how to make illustration unique and fresh in this snippet from his interview with The Art of the Picture Book.
It’s like anybody can take a good photo, where the color’s right and the focus. It’s beside the point now. Everybody is a photographer. So now it’s about where you’re standing again. It’s not about how beautiful the photo is or if you can apply a filter to it properly because anybody can do that.
I think it should be the same with illustration. Lots of people can draw really beautifully or they can make something pretty with Photoshop. But where are you standing? What do you have to say?
I'm hoping Klassen has plenty to say and am looking forward to many more award winning books in the future.

Another Place - Crosby Beach

Making the most of the sun last weekend, we took a trip out to the beach. I have been wanting to visit Crosby Beach for some time to go see Antony Gormley's 'Another Place'. The collection of a 100 standing iron men sculptures has now been in residence there for 10 years(!). So glad to have finally seen it!

ANOTHER PLACE | CROSBY BEACH - IMAGES EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA

above: view out to sea of another place by antony gormley at crosby beach

I have mixed feeling about Antony Gormley's work. On the face of it, the work seems quite self interested - most of his sculptures (if not all) are based on his own figure. I'm not particularly keen on the Angel of the North situated by Gateshead, or at least the naming of it. To me it appears a sad angel that will never fly, permanently stuck in some rusty industrial time, never progressing. That's not how I imagine the 'North'.

ANOTHER PLACE | CROSBY BEACH - IMAGES EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA
top: one of the 100 standing men in another place by antony gormley, middle: crosby beach vista, bottom: standing man's view out to sea

'Another Place' is a much more successful piece. Crosby is the ideal home for this work. The iron material the figures are made from links up well with the surrounding industrial architecture. Crosby isn't a friendly bathers holiday beach. It's wind swept, unkempt, vast and dangerous in parts - with soft sand and risk of changing tides.

STANDING MEN | ANOTHER PLACE | CROSBY BEACH - IMAGES EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA
top: close up of one of the standing men, bottom: barnacled legs

The figures are positioned permanently looking out to sea, their eyes and mouths are closed, giving them a wistful look. They look quite solemn, seemly contemplating life and being resolved to their fate whilst the sea slowly erodes them. One of the benefits of waiting a while to visit this piece is seeing how the figures have succumbed over time, now very rusty, barnacled & some sunken.

ANOTHER PLACE | CROSBY BEACH - IMAGES EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA
top: beach vista, middle: close up of one of the standing men, bottom: crosby beach

'Another Place' is an apt name for this work, it is other worldly. A place like no other.

Shop Spot - Buy Me Once

It has been busy week here. I've happily taken some time out to mention this fab little shop Buy Me Once. I am all for buying less and buying better but in busy modern life it can be difficult to find the time to search out those long lasting products.  We've all been there, my personal arch nemesis is the toaster - I have yet to find one that can withstand more than two years of intensive family use. While 'Buy Me Once' cannot initially solve my toaster rage, it does provide a fantastic selection of of well designed goods that will go the distance. It's easy to see why this shop is getting some great reviews. Here are my top picks.

I love the company motto 'love things that last'. Armed with shops like this we can hopefully be saving money (no more replacement buys!) and the planet in one.

Vogue100: A Century of Style

The National Portrait Gallery (one of my faves) and Vogue have come together to create an inspiring exhibition of fashion photography. Looking at the Vogue back catalogue, the curators have collated the best images of cutting edge fashion, beauty and portraiture from 100 years of Vogue publications. Happily the exhibition has come to Manchester Art Gallery and I went to take a look.

VOGUE100 - IMAGES EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA & MANCHESTER ART GALLERY

For any budding photographer (and avid selfie fanatic) this exhibition is well worth a look, as there are plenty of ideas of how to add creativity to your images. Celeb spotters will be happy too, there is a long list from Henri Matisse to David Beckham, see how many you recognise! And of course there is the fashion & beauty to inspire with designers from Dior to McQueen.

I especially liked how the exhibition has been put together. Grouped by decade, the images give a real sense of life at that time, who we followed and trends we loved (and some we would rather forget!).

Project - Mini Bar

Taking some inspiration from Abigail Ahern, I started a new project to create a mini bar!

MINI BAR - IMAGES EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA
above: my newly repaired, upcycled mini bar.

The old unit (seen below) was lacking in love and attention, it had been in left in the back of my Grandma's garage awaiting someone to give it a new lease of life. It was missing a shelf and also had a cracked glass panel. After sanding back the surface to give the paint a key, I applied some undercoat followed by the Farrow & Ball Down Pipe grey on the interior (to match the wall behind) and their new colour Yellowcake for the exterior.

Once painted, I had the glass replaced and a new glass shelf made. Now it sits happy in our dining room filled with a variety of glasses that I've inherited. I've yet to style the top with a selection of party drinks ware (cocktail shaker and the like) but I'm looking forward to doing this at the next shindig!

Shop Spot - RadStudio Saltaire

I discovered a fab creative shop RadStudio during my recent visit to Saltaire village. Embracing the trend for lifestyle stores with everything from t-shirts to stationery, RadStudio offers a great selection of contemporary, well-designed products.

Similar to Idaho in Altrincham, the use of natural materials in both products and the shop interior gives a warm and inviting atmosphere. This contrasted with bright colour & unusual objects makes for a very playful modern space.

Saltaire

Today's post is about a recent visit to my cousin's new home town, the fab creative hub, Saltaire. The village is so unique it has world heritage status and it is easy to see why. Even the most functional of buildings have beautiful architecture, all linked together in the same stone. On top of that Saltaire has become a home for some great creative businesses.

Saltaire Canteen is a great example of this innovative village (5 star rating on trip advisor). The menu is made from surplus food collected from food retailers/supermarkets/shops before it is thrown in the bin. Customers are invited to 'pay as you feel', whatever you think the meal is worth. The aim is to reduce food waste and poverty.

SALTS MILL, SALTAIRE - IMAGES EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA

The jewel in the crown is Salts Mill. It is home to a host of creative businesses including the 1853 Gallery (the world's largest permanent collection of David Hockney's work), Salts Book & Poster store (I could have easily spent hours in here), Salts Diner, The Home (a fantastic collection of homeware),  Carlton Antiques (best selection of antique vases I've seen), Gallery Three (houses the recent iPad works by David Hockney) & Cafe in the Opera (had a very yummy bakewell tart there!).

I hope to be returning to Saltaire soon. Well worth a visit!

It's lovely to see this trend appearing in greeting cards & stationery with Katie Leamon. The pastel colours Katie's used on the notebooks below give marbling a fresh new look - on trend with the Pantone colours of the year, Rose Quartz & Serenity.

This innovative lifestyle shop recently caught my eye. Holding a regular spot at Altrincham Market, Object Style, offers a well crafted selection of artisan design sourced from makers and small independents.

Shop Spot - Idaho Altrincham

Having spent many an hour over the years in gift shops around the UK it is a truly wonderful experience when finding a gem such as the recent addition to the Altrincham scene, Idaho.

IDAHO, ALTRINCHAM - TOP IMAGE EMILY HAUCK KARIKA NOVA
Top: Sunday's visit to Idaho - image Emily Hauck,  Bottom: shop interior - image from Idaho

Embracing modern tastes for well made design-led products, Idaho stocks a forward-thinking selection of ceramics, tableware, stationery, gift wrap & cards, art prints, accessories and more. The use of natural materials (for me, nicely avoiding anything too garish or plasticy!) in both products and the shop interior gives a warm, calming and inviting atmosphere. It is a refreshing place of contemporary inspirational lifestyle.

Firm favourites appear here Rifle Paper, Ruth Jackson, Katie Leamon, Kinfolk to name a few. Lovely to see these all gathered under one roof. I'll certainly look forward to visiting again soon.
